  • Medieval Barcelona

    Friday, 27 April 2018
    09:30 - 13:00 hrs

Stories and legends hidden among the narrow and mysterious streets of the Gothic Quarter.

A trip back in time through the streets of the city. The Catalan capital is a very old city with a history dating back thousands of years. In this visit you will discover the Medieval Barcelona, with its stories and legends hidden among the narrow and mysterious streets of the Gothic Quarter. The Medieval Barcelona dates (more or less) to the eleventh century AD, after the occupation of the city by the Moors. Barcelona began a long period of prosperity with Charlemagne, thanks to its leadership in trade across the Mediterranean. The city became a powerful center of naval command and commercial base, so magnificent Gothic buildings were built, and the medieval heart of the city was protected by new walls.

  • Modernist Barcelona

    Sunday, 29 April 2018
    09:30 - 13:00 hrs

Modernism was a cultural movement which impacted on all manifestations of art and thinking; however it was in architecture that reached its true pinnacle.

In the late 19th century, at the time of the Universal Exhibition of 1888, Barcelona was a bustling city in which architecture played a major role as an indicator of the social status of the then flourishing bourgeoisie. Having a Modernist house meant that one was keeping up with the trends of the social elite. To meet the expectations and vanities of their clients, the architects used their whole repertoire of resources in their work: floral decorations, rich sculptural and wrought iron work, undulating forms, stained glass, graffito work, and ceramic details.

Barcelona Modernism Route: During the route, you will discover both the most impressive buildings, monuments and houses. It gives a wide, in-depth view of this architecture and is a good option to discover the city in general.
